Opening up about the film, Tarsem shares, “Mastaney is not just a movie, its emotions and feelings. Its plot has been inspired by the true incidents of Punjab’s history.
STORY: After Nader Shah’s army is plundered by a faction of rebellious Sikhs during his exit from India, he is out for revenge and seeks assistance from Lahore governor, Zakariya Khan. Khan engages four petty bazigars luring them with money, to enact as Sikhs to appease Nader. However, playing the Sikhs transforms these petty commoners into courageous Sikhs , who eventually display unusual valour in the end fighting against Khan’s army and are martyred. Their courage attracts admiration of Nader who deems that one day Sikhs will rule this region.
REVIEW: An epic tale from Indian history dating to 1739, the story is inspired by the rise of the warrior Sikhs who began gathering against the Mughal empire in that era. Through a fictitious narrative of five common men, the film etches the characteristic trait of Sikh bravery borrowing from the teachings of warrior Sikh gurus like Guru Hargobind Singh, Guru Teg Bahadur and Guru Gobind Singh. The story begins with the shenanigans of these four commoners, including Zahoor (Tarsem Jassar) and Bashir (Karamjit Anmol) highlighting their buffooneries as Zakariya Khan’s (Avtar Gill) wazir (Arif Zakaria) engages them to play the role of Sikhs. Towards the climax when another commoner, a fakir called Kalander (Gurpreet Ghuggi) arouses them into Sikh valour with the stories of Sikh heroism and power of ardaas, their transformation looks stark.
Drawing upon this transcendence from common to the super brave, the director has done a spectacular job as he etched each character with equal measure, to justify them as the symbolic five Sikhs of the martial race. Leading this pack of commoners, Zahoor’s character essayed by Tarsem is as close to a conman with his kohl laden eyes and frivolous mannerisms, and thus lends great credibility to the portrayal.
Ghuggi has put in tremendous effort by projecting a nuanced and insightful fakir whose allegiance lies with the warrior Sikhs since his life was saved by them when he was roaming the land as a kid. He is the one who helms the responsibility of leading the four commoners from plebian to lofty when he instils in them the values of Sikhs through the recitation of the ardaas, urging them to fight against the robust army of Khan even though they are terribly outnumbered.
Banninder Bunny and Honey Mattu deserve special mention for essaying the other two commoners with as much zest, never letting the script falter. Rahul Dev plays Nader Shah with an unusual ease of Punjabi language and dons the traits of a Persian ruler plundering the country, to perfection.
Simi Chahal’s role as Zahoor’s love interest, Noor is small, but she ensures infusing it with credibility.
The film is a huge effort for the Punjabi industry to emerge from the tag of comics. Though it requires more depth in its building up of the commoners to becoming warriors, the story engages with its grand cinematography and martial display in the climax. The music is another highlight that captures with its undertones of Mughal influence and Sikh hues.

Tufang Movie Review : Tufang- An intriguing plot
Ankur Batra, Jul 21, 2023, 09.49 PM ISTCritic’s Rating: 3.5/5
STORY: The title Tufang draws influence from Persian language, meaning a long-barrel firing gun. While Arjun Randhawa (Guri) and Rukshaar Dhillon (Deep) share a deep chemistry onscreen, Jagjeet Sandhu’s acting prowess is apparent, with him getting into the skin of his character in the film– Mouser Singh Brar. He essays a negative character, and is an onscreen brother-in-law of Guri. It starts with a gun stolen from a gun house run by Guri and his granddad. In a quest to trace the culprit, Guri goes a long way, eventually to discover something more than just a simple case of shoplifting. The thrill and suspense continues as director Dheeraj Kedarnath Rattan and screenplay writer Manila Ratan weaves a web of suspense along with dialogues of Gurpreet Bhullar, further complemented by film’s action director Sham Kaushal.
The film moves around Guri, Jagjeet and Rukshaar. The film also has a strong message of using weapons only to eradicate crime and to stand up for truth. It shows how a gullible person falls in the trap of guys, who lured her for marriage.
